September 1, 2008: And End to a Lovely Weekend at Home- Updated

This is what I woke up to this morning.

I know.

I made my dad and myself steel but oats this morning (I love having the time to do this!).  Here’s my bowl with a dew chocolate chips and a banana.  While it was cooking, I added cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg so it tasted really earthy.

Here’s my dish all stirred up.

Now I am off to the gym with my dad, then I catch a train so I can gethome in time for Gossip Girl- hope you guys had a great weekend!

Wow- Gossip Girl made my life.  I think Monday is my new favorite day of the week.  Oh right, this is a food blog.  I packed my lunch for the train, which was so well-balanced and perfectly refueled me after my workout:  peanut butter and apricot jam on sprouted grain bread, a strawberry-banana yogurt, cucumber and celery slices, and a crisp Vermont apple.

I get off the train at Union Station, I always feel so happy- I love coming “home.”  DC is such a wonderful city.  My neighborhood, Glover Park, is particularly fabulous.  I walked to Whole Foods When I got home after dropping my luggage off in my apartment and really appreciated how I love that DC has all the cultural and professional opportunities I need, but still manages to be so easy to live in- I walk everywhere, I can enjoy local restaurants (i.e., it’s not like there is a Panera on every corner, unlike in NJ), and the people here are so down-to-earth.  Especially my neighborhood, Glover Park- it’s mostly young professionals, and I really feel a part of my community when I buy my local produce at Whole Foods and walk home with my groceries in my reusable bag, just as everyone in Glover Park does!

I made a killing at Whole Foods.  One of the best parts about shopping there is you learn where all of your produce comes from!  Plus, if you make sure to get the really local, apex of the season stuff, it is always the most delicious and inexpensive.  I got all this for $53.00!

Dinner was excellent.  A big big salad with peanut dressing, a delicious fresh whole wheat roll from WholeFoods (I wanted to treat myself) with 1 oz. of a fantastic Forume D’Ambery bleu cheese, and a big bowl of the last watermelon I will buy until next year, drizzled with agave.

You can guess which part was my favorite- to die for!

I was still craving a little something more, so crunched on a Ginger Gold apple as well.

I really had a wonderful weekend at home with my family and Mike.  Although I had a couple of treats (dessert, seconds), I also basically managed to stick to my diet and did get some exercise, so I feel ready to start the week with a clean conscience.  Now to get some rest- I can’t believe it is almost fall!
