New Feature: “How I Fit in My Little Black Dress”

So tonight I am introducing a new feature entitled How I Fit in My Little Black Dress.  In this recurring offering, I will interview someone I admire for their fabulous figure and healthy lifestyle.  I will be choosing to interview people that don’t food blog or work directly with food as their full-time job because I think it is important (for me and for others) to understand that you don’t have to spend hours  a day thinking about food or fitness in order to have a healthy body and great self esteem.  Please feel free to send me suggestions or reactions, and please do enjoy!

In its first carnation, How I Fit in My Little Black Dress spotlights a blogger I greatly admire from  The President Wears Prada, an absolutely fabulous DC fashion blog that showcases high end style for a city that is generally known for its lack thereof (read:  pleated pants, square-toe shoes, bulging button-down shirts, etc.) as well as the hottest places to eat and drink.  Best of all, she models tons of her unique looks herself, and it is impossible not to notice just how fiercely lean she is!

So I had to ask her, how do you stay so slim amidst the hours spent blogging and the nights at DC’s swank restaurants and fettes indulging in cocktails, chocolate, and sauces?

Here’s what she said:

I love food and I think I probably lucked out with a good metabolism, but I have a very balanced diet, lots of fruits, a very healthy breakfast (soy milk, granola, bananas, blueberries, yogurt), lots of veggies and healthy proteins for lunch.  I eat out for dinner 98% of the time and I eat whatever I am craving, but I think that’s balanced by my daily snacks, which I think are the key of my diet that’s different than a lot of people I know who eat healthy meals but horribly unhealthy snacks.  I am not an unhealthy snacker, because luckily for me I don’t really get cravings for snacks for things like cookies, chips, ice-cream, donuts, etc.  I only really snack because I know they’re good for me and I choose things I like, like fruits and lots of nuts.  For the past three months I have also been working out with a personal trainer twice a week, and I chose to start doing it because I hate working out, so this way I am able to have someone who pushes me and motivates me.  He also keeps track of my diet, and is the reason I am very diligent about snacking to keep up my energy level, and has added things like a hard-boiled egg in the morning and more healthy fats (salmon, avocado, olive oil) to my diet.

This fabulous woman also gave us 5 places she loves to eat and healthy choices she enjoys at each- thank you so much for sharing!

1.  Cafe Bonaparte

The Mallorca Sandwich: Sauteed eggplant, zucchini, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese (optional) & olive tapenade on Foccacia bread (served warm)

The Lisbon Crepe: smoked salmon, shallots, chives, dill

The Ivy League: Romaine lettuce, grilled asparagus, avocado, tomato, cucumber and corn with white balsamic vinaigrette (+smoked tofu)

3.  Enology Wine Bar

Banana Lassi: frothy yogurt drink w/honey

5. Komi

The chef is incredibly accommodating, he will prepare a vegetarian tasting menu for you upon advanced request.

*Here’s my interpretation:  Healthy snacks are the key to looking awesome, as exemplified by Ms. TPWP.  Clearly, her between-meal fruits and nuts are keeping her metabolism up and running!  I also love that she doesn’t work out 9 times a week, but recognizes that she needs professional assistance in order to stay motivated.  Ms. TPWP also shows that by focusing on healthy ingredients and great flavor, you can have great food while out with friends at fabulous restaurants- without filling out!  Thanks so much, TPWP, for your awesome contribution to Meals from the Girl in the Little Black Dress!
