I definitely don’t have “a case of the Mondays” this week because it is so short! Mike and I are leaving for New Jersey early on Thursday afternoon, so just 3.5 days to this week (we are both from the same hometown and can’t wait to spend the weekend with our families and friends).
Before I tell you about my food, let me tell you about some thoughts I have had. On Saturday morning, I felt kind of lousy- I had all kinds of “indulgences” in the last week- white bread, brownies, red wine, and some diet soda I didn’t tell you guys about (whoops)! Anyway, although I am pretty moderate about my indulgences, I just wasn’t feeling 100%. I also know that this upcoming weekend will be full of drinks, food, and celebrating and I don’t want to feel bad about enjoying any of the wine, desserts, and home-cooked meals that come my way. After reading how much Vegan On Stage benefitted from a couple of days of eating raw, I thought I would try my own little “detox” for the next couple of days. So for today and tomorrow, I am going to stick to raw fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, dried fruit, and various condiments.
Breakfast was a big ol’ tupperware of fruit salad with strawberries, pineapple, banana slices, and watermelon. This suprisingly kept me relatively satisfied for a few hours. Maybe the girls from “Skinny Bitch” are on to something when they tell you to stick to fruit for breakfast!
I had a handful of trail mix at noon to hold me over until lunch.
Lunch was a big ol’ salad with a sprinkling of raisins and a lite raspberry walnut vinagrette, and a big ol’ tupperware container of watermelon. After eating this I still was a little hungry, so I had a small handful of trail mix (no pic, sorry!).
I had a snack of another handful of trail mix and this tiny box of raisins. All in all, I felt pretty satisfied throughout the day, but I definitely miss my oatmeal and bread!
Ew- that is a really blurry pic. After work, I went on a serious produce shopping binge at Giant. My arms are killing me- I must have bought about 25-30 lbs. of produce. I sometimes am amazed by just how much I eat- each week I end carrying at least that weight in food home (no need for a gym at least!). I suppose that when you eat mostly produce, you’ll eat a lot more in volume than someone who eats more processed foods and meat.
I snacked on two carrots when I got home from work. Then dinner was a delicious salad- collards, radishes, white corn, white and green onions, grape tomatoes, red cabbage, carrots, raisins, and walnuts with a combo of Goddess/Gingerly Vinagrette dressing/mustard. I def. put too much dressing on, but that’s what made it extra delicious! I also had a bowl of watermelon and honeydew which were both a little raw so I drizzled some honeydew on them.
All in all, I felt pretty satisfied today and enjoyed everything I ate. Whereas I wouldn’t want to eat like this forever (I love carbs too much!), this is making me feel really prepared for a weekend of fun with my family and friends. Night!

I love all the fresh, yummy-looking produce! I have to get to the grocery store so badly.
I’m interested to see how your raw eating experiment goes…it’s something I’m getting increasingly interested in!

Good luck with your raw eating experiment! Sometimes it can feel really good to eat really “clean” for a few days, esp. just before or after a vacation. Focusing on fruits and veggies always makes my body happy.
Do you find that you have trouble getting enough protein on a raw food diet? Even most of my favorite vegetable sources of protein involve some amount of cooking. (Beans, tofu, quinoa, etc.)
Another question: why no oats? Aren’t your overnight oats just soaked? So aren’t they a raw food? Or are you concerned that the oat itself has been steamed before pressing?

I’m not sure I have strength for all of that… all raw! Yikes! GL… and be sure to let us know how you feel through the process!
I love those Giant (heh heh) bags of spinach… they always have really great produce prices (well comparatively at least)… you know what’s really sad about our nation though, that you probably eat the same volume as the majority, you’re just picking the healthier side of it all… scary thought!
Take care!
P.S. I think you’re awesome… there may need to be a food blogger’s of DC event in the near future

Blueberry hill- great questions! Truthfully, I am sure that I am getting less protein than I normally would. In my regular diet, I get most of my protein from whole grains, so eliminating those greatly reduces my protein potential! To that effect, I am trying to eat a lot more seeds than normal. But truthfully, I am not a “perfectly” balanced person- each day I have a little more carbs or fat or veggies than the other food groups. So this week I don’t have too much protein, but anticipate a lot of protein this weekend (probably even some meat!) so I think in the end it all balances out. I will however, be sure to be really congnisant of how my body feels- if I begin to feel weak, I know I need a big spoonful of nuts! Also, I do believe that my “rolled oats” are steamed first, which is why I am staying away from them. I wonder if using steel cut oats would make it a raw food? I will certainly investigate!
RLS- Thanks so much for your support! I just love your blog and your honesty. I am excited about the idea of making an even smaller DC based community. I think in the coming months we def. need to plan for a fun get together. I will def. keep you posted about how I feel over the next couple of days!
